Cardinal directions3/28/2023 ![]() I charge my crystals with energy from each direction of wind and also interpret that direction in divination. The cardinal directions have their own meanings as well, though I’d argue are not as prevalently used as the elements.Īs a weather worker, I use the cardinal directions very often. In the end, the elements are used for a lot of things, from activation of sigils, to power spells, in tarot readings, etc. For example, during the summer festivals the element fire may be heavily used. The elements are commonly used in Sabbats and other festivals. It’s all about figuring what works best for you. Of course, not every witch is the same, so some do not use the elements in casting circles, but have their own way. A lot of circle casting rituals turn to each direction, and ask each element politely to lend some protection, then up and down sometimes. The ritual to open and then close the circle can rely very heavily on the elements. If you aren’t familiar with circle casting, it is a protective measure that is taken before doing spellwork or other magick that could open you up to other beings/spirits/etc. People also use the elements and cardinal directions to cast circles. These are super easy to remember, and are some of the most basic symbols of witchcraft. The elements are commonly shown by four different symbols, each different variations of a triangle. Up is usually context for the heavens, the stars, or any deities who rule the sky as well. Down may symbolize the underworld, or a deity of the underworld or rich earth, so try not to confuse the two. I know I’ve repeated earth but the context is quite different. There are also two other simple directions: up and down. And finally storms generally come from the East, so East and air. Moss grows on trees facing north, so north and earth. I live in the north, so when I think of the south, I think of heat from the southern hemisphere, which relates to fire. Memory Tip: If you struggle with remembering which direction goes with which element, you can try remembering it how I do. ![]() Some people like to argue about which directions go where, but I believe this is the most common way to connect them. North is earth, East is air, South is fire, and West is water. Each direction has a corresponding element: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. So now it’s time to learn the witchcraft version of this. We had a little chant that went “Never Eat Soggy Waffles”, and that’s how we remembered them. So what are the cardinal directions? You’ve most likely learned about them in a non-witchcraft scenario in kindergarten or your very first years in schooling, as they are the four basic directions: North, East, South, and West. What they mean, how we can use them in our practices, and some basic correspondences. This is gonna be a real simple, beginner friendly introduction into the cardinal directions and elements. Hello! I hope you are having a lovely day today.

But this time the seas had retreated, much of their mass being locked away into ice. The Sun was kindled into life once more, and Abeir-Toril again flourished. In the end, the primordials were defeated by one of their own Ubtao swapped sides, helping the gods defeat the primordials in return for lands and worshippers of his own. A long war resulted, but the two sides were too evenly matched. His opposite number, the god known as Ouroboros, the World Serpent, led the gods of the system into battle. One of the mightiest of their number, Dendar the Night Serpent, consumed the Sun to plunge Realmspace into freezing cold, an era known as the Shadow Epoch. Many other gods formed at this time, as sentient life spread through Abeir-Toril’s oceans and their need for faith and worship grew.Īlas, the primordials returned. The planet was completely covered in water, but a multitude of life grew in the deep oceans, during what became known as the Blue Age. Mystryl withheld her powers from both sisters, bringing an end to their warring.Īlthough life flourished on all worlds in Realmspace, the most promising was Abeir-Toril, third planet from the Sun. A fourth goddess, Mystryl, Lady of Magic, was created during this period. The goddesses united their power to defeat the primordials, driving them into hiding or imprisoned in remote corners of Realmspace. However, this activity attracted the attention of the primordials, powerful beings who desired dominion over all worlds in the multiverse. The two sisters warred and Selûne proved victorious, creating the Sun. ![]() Chauntea’s recommendation was to create light and warmth within the system, but the twin sisters quarrelled Shar, Sister of Night and Darkness, hated the idea.
